I have to admit that when I started this, I had no idea what blogging was, or that other medical blogs existed! I am happy to have found this ‘community’ of like minded bloggers. This is something that I had intentions on doing since I started medical school, but didn’t have the patients to either [...]

Update This post has been corrected to account for my understandable confusion between sanitarium and sanitorium, thanks to one of my commenters A sanitorium is not an asylum. Before I went to medical school, I the word sanitorium had connotations of mental illness, wards of the state and people living in the fringes of society. [...]

No, the trauma bay is not quite like San Fransisco Bay or Chesapeake Bay. The trauma bay is the specialized room where trauma alerts arrive, usually from the helicopter, but occasionally by ambulance. The trauma bay has everything you could possibly need while resucitating a patient within about 6 feet of the patient’s bed. Equipment [...]

Zebras and other equines is an humerous explanation (in my opinion) for the non-medical layperson of the continual learning cycles and “aha!” discoveries made as one matures from a medical student, to a resident and beyond… House of God was recently released as a new edition! This book is irreverent and hilarious, please don’t be [...]

We had one of these in the Emergency Department yesterday! Do you know what kind it is? A farmer was bitten by it, so he put it in a giant clear tupperware storage container, called 911, and the crew brought in both patients! We separated the patient and his beast, but he insisted that we [...]

Yesterday was my second flight shift since becoming an “upper level” (like I got smart overnight or something), and my first flight! I was so excited when the radio sounded it’s shrill tones just like on that 70s TV show…Rescue (?). “Flight physician on standby for an MVA in Western County.” Yippee . The senior [...]

OK, another day off, and it’s raining so I finally decided to tinker with my bike. As bike parts go, I am a Luddite. My bicycle is made by Bridgestone, who doesn’t sell bikes anymore. My component parts are Suntour, who is not even in business anymore. After 15 years of tooling around on my [...]

Finally, I’m back at work, it seems like I’ve been of for a long time, even though it’s only been two days. I guess coming out of the ICU when having four hours of free time every three days was a lot, forty-eight hours is an eternity! Tonight was a pain in the ass to [...]
