Inspiration

OK, I’ve been trying really hard these last days to find an inspiring patient story to share with you all, and it’s just not there. Tonight I had 2 patients with cancer, and I though to myself, ‘Cancer…now there’s a patient I can really have true compassion for…’ Well, I just couldn’t muster it up. [...]

TItmouse

Tufted Titmouse comes to visit on my porch.Posted by Hello Finally I spotted it! I purposely let the birdseed run out in my yard feeder, so that the birds would begin comign up to the porch. Yesterday, I heard a lot of commotion through my open screen door. I looked out and saw a light [...]

Diabetic Keto Blogosis

WHen I first started blogging, I was determined to post only medical anecdotes…funny & interesting stories of the human spirit, patient interactions and things I’d learned from patients. The stories were easy to come by…out of the dozen or more patients I saw every day, surely one was a fun, interesting experience. But of late, [...]

Ana who?

Anaphylaxis. It’s a life-threatening allergic reaction to any number of things…bees, shellfish, peanuts…and the reason that people carry “epi-pens” around with them. Last night, a man in his 50s who’d never had an allergic reaction before was wheeled in unresposive, driven to the ED by his wife after eating at a chinese restaraunt. He was [...]

2 extremes

First extreme: Scene call on chopper for girl on bicycle vs. tractor trailer. Bad. My first field intubation that I directed. It’s different trying to manage not only the medical aspects of the patient’s care, but coordinating six EMTs/Medics that you’ve never met and don’t know anything about their skills. I was at the head [...]

Special Day

it’s my kitties birthday, five years old! They don’t seem to care much, but they smile every time I say happy birthday. Trust me…I’m not “wierd cat lady,” but close. See “fav post” Out of Mind for a cool story about medicine and my cat.

Now THAT’s what I’m talking about…

7 AM and I walk in to the overhead page of “helicopter in route with tachycardia”. I get the scoop…tachycardia, possible pacemaker gone awry? She arrives on the helicopter gurney, smelling like an odd morning mixture of jet fuel and fresh air. Her heart rate is 190, but she sits awake, talking to us. No [...]

Facing your fears

Now I see the secret to getting visiters and comments…discuss politiks! (I suppose religion would work as well). I appreciate all that’s been said, it’s amazing how much reaction I got from a one line post! (See “The Party Question” below). That being said, the fear of being sued in spite of practicing good, evidence [...]

Waiting to Exhale

This case goes one step beyond the last post…not only did the patient present HER diagnosis regarding her 3 year old daughter, but she was so distraught over the diagnosis she had come to that she couldn’t even talk to me without crying. I realize to some of you reading that this whole story may [...]
