I just searched the Adobe User Forums because I had the same problem (my patcher folder wasted about 1gb) and they said it's safe to delete it :)

The questions is, are they safe to remove and only required for installing the patch? I assume removing them will make it impossible to uninstall the patch, but I also don't want the Adobe Updater thinking it needs to re-update for patches it's already installed. I have about 3.5 GB of these files and I really could use that space back. I guess I'll search the Adobe User Forums...

These are patches for various Adobe applications. I have the CS3 Master Suite, and Adobe has left 2.75 GB (yes, gigabytes) of these patch files on my hard drive. I found out what they were by simply running one of the PatcherApplication.exe files manually.

Try searching "Patcher StagingArea", both part of the file paths. You end up with a clue... Adobe Patcher.

After that search for "Adobe Patcher Temp" to make sure those files are left-overs by the Adobe update application.

Damn careless if you ask me; leaving your customers' PC with hundreds of MB's of crap.

Wow, thanks for the insight. Glad to see that some computer geeks read Doc Shazam as well. LOL. I've never used computational chemistry software on this laptop (that I'm aware of), but I do install and unistall a lot of stuff to try it out.

I've never done train simulation games either, but it sounds like it could be fun!

My apologies if I'm stating the obvious:

I tried a search for "patcher pbs", which turned up a link for something called "<a href="http://www.webmo.net/index.html" rel="nofollow">WebMO</a>", computational chemistry software.

Or are you interested in <a href="http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=36107" rel="nofollow">train simulation games</a>?

I think file names like this ("abcd####.xyz", where "####" is random digits) arise because the #### sequence is assigned at install or runtime. Some viruses do this as deliberate obfuscation, but lots of legitimate applications do as well, particularly TEMP files. I've also seen cases, mostly viruses, where executables (.EXE, .DLL, etc,) have random alphabetical filenames (e.g., "QGTYX.DLL")

What intrigues me is that there are so few hits for the "zdct" file extension, none of which immediately strike me as relevant.
