I agree with the statement that healthcare costs are out of control due to too much healthcare. I feel that the for profit nature of our system is part of what creates this ‘anxious wimpiness’ that Dr. Doyle decries. Drug companies spend a lot of $$ on advertising and perks for doctors to push these products that may not even be needed.

100% agree, but things even come going worst…
Come to Spain where all health care is free for the “customer” (we don´n have “patients”).
Goverment and Public Health Authorities doesn´t support your deccisions…as you write, patients always are right, even if they hit you…
What´s the solution? if patient wants a CT, give him a CT (neither you nor the patient pays for it, indeed the goverment “all of us” pays). No matter about radiation exposure (for the patient is “curative”)…
Time is coming to crash the system at least!!!!
It is the price of the first world medicine.
Some experts argues against “deffensive medicine” many of them have never see a fight patient in the wee hours…

With the expansion of the media to everyone, all people are now exposed to messages and ads that play on our fears and anxieties. The problem arises because most people now lack the cognitive skills (or sophistication) to separate REAL risk from the ‘virtual’ risks these messages bombard us with constantly.
